History of Solitaire Video Games
Having its origins date back to mid-18th century, Solitaire is one of the most popular video games of today. Not so commonly seen played with cards anymore, it has taken over the free time of many office workers all over the world.
Previously known under the name of Patience or Cabale, the game is most likely German or Scandinavian in origin. Used not only for the game, but also as a matter of fortune telling, it was first mentioned in 1765, with the earliest known recording occurring in 1783 in the German game anthology. The game became popular in the 19th century, and regained its popularity in 1980s with the help of personal computers.
The goal of Solitaire is sorting out a layout of cards in a certain manner. It typically begins with a dealing of cards from a shuffled deck into a predefined arrangement. The player then attempts to reorder the deck by suit and rank. There is a set of rules and restrictions, which limits the freedom of player's moves.
There are more than 100 different Solitaire games, reaching over 1000 if all the minor variations are considered. Many of these versions of Solitaire have been converted to electronic form and became available as computer games. Most popular is the Klondike Solitaire, which, together with FreeCell, comes in every installation of Microsoft Windows, apart from Windows 8, where 6 unique card games can be downloaded for free from the app store in the form of the Microsoft Solitaire Collection.
Solitaire has several games built solely around it. They often feature custom layouts, rules, goals, implement different versions of the puzzle. It can be found on practically any modern platform and remains to be an extremely popular way to spend time.
