History of Commando
Commando was released in 1985. It's a vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up arcade game. It was an important influence to many later games of the genre and received awards for best shooting game of the year and best arcade-style game of the year. It was praised for its non-stop action and challenging gameplay.
The goal of the game is to rescue important captives by destroying the enemy base. It is said to be impregnable. Nonetheless, the player takes control of a highly trained soldier named Super Joe who has to fight his way through the jungle, fending off a massive assault of enemy soldiers. He is equipped with a sub-machine gun with unlimited ammunition and a replenishable amount of hand grenades. Along the way, he can attempt to free the prisoners of war that are being transported by the enemy.
Commando was ported to many platforms - most of the old and modern consoles (Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, MSX, ZX Spectrum, Intellivision, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Amiga, Nintendo Entertainment System, Acorn Electron, BBC Micro and PC).
It was followed by a sequel in 1989, known under the name of Mercs, and a second sequel in 2008, known under the name of Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3. The name of the main character is revealed in 2009 version of Bionic Commando, where Super Joe is identified as Joseph Gibson, one of the three playable characters in Mercs.
It had influential impact to the genre and is currently valuable as a great example of a popular action game of that era.
