History of Bejeweled

Bejeweled was first developed in 2001 and started out as a browser game. It was originally created by under the name of Diamond Mine and became a successful project for the company. The name was changed after a deal with Microsoft.

The objective of this puzzle game is to form horizontal or vertical chains of three or more gems of the same color by swapping them with adjacent ones. There are few different game modes available, including the time trial where the player has to connect more chains in order to win. In general, connecting more than three gems ends up in different power-ups and more points.

Due to its huge success, Bejeweled was ported to many other platforms, including various smartphone, console and browser versions. It received several sequels, thus becoming a series, addons and special editions, connected to platforms and different events. The game has been downloaded over 150 million times and is widely known among the players on many different resources, with its greatest popularity source being on Facebook.

Bejeweled was most likely influenced by a 1988 game Shariki, created by a Russian developer. However, on its own, Bejeweled became an inspiration to many similar games in the genre, including the famous Candy Crush Saga, which has claimed the title of the most popular Facebook game.
